The best way to find out is to become a "fly on the wall" in a store, salon, or school. We always encourage prospective students to come in and tour the facility at Heavenly Cut's Dog Grooming Agency.  We also invite them to spend a few hours or even the entire day observing. Many pet owners get their feet wet by discovering

Part-time positions in entry-level pet care facilities. It could be a pet store, kennel, vet clinic, or grooming salon. This is a great way to see if you enjoy working with the pets and have what it takes to advance your career.

Experience is not required, but it is advantageous. Getting as much information as possible before beginning your program is a great way to get yourself in a learning mindset. Understanding pet behavior and proper handling skills are important parts of becoming a groomer. Your passion for animals, combined with the skills and techniques you will learn at Paragon, will serve as the foundation for your grooming career.

Brushing a dog keeps tangles and mats out of their fur. It also helps spread the oils on their skin, which helps their coat stay nice and shiny. Brushing your dog is also a great way to check them over for fleas and ticks, which should be caught as early as possible.  Dogs with long haired coats or thick doubles coats should be brushed every day.  If a dog's coat is not maintained properly and mats form, it can take much longer for a groomer to make the dog's coat look nice again. A matted coat can also cause injury due to hairs digging into the dog's skin and causing it to bleed.

This is the big question that many people seem to ask. Why is a trip to the groomer so expensive?  Well, for one, the dog groomer cleans the dog's rear end. The coat has gone several weeks without being clipped or washed (not always). The dog gets a sanitary trim. The ears are cleaned and sometimes a dog may scratch or bite.  There is more to it than just that. If your interested the following is a great link.

You can get your start in a professional grooming career in just 6 weeks. You will learn about canine anatomy and behavior so that you can handle your pet safely. You will learn grooming skills and techniques by studying and practicing breed knowledge. Everything is planned in such a way that it helps to reinforce proper understanding for working professionally with pets.

Education should not stop with graduation. Commit to a lifetime of learning to become the best you can be.

Your earning ability can vary based on your location, available breeds, your skill level, grooming quality, and how many dogs you are able to groom each day. The more you work to increase your grooming, customer service, and self-marketing skills the more potential earning power you will have. Successful professional stylists never stop learning. Those who embrace education in their careers will ultimately earn more.
